Brookfield Place
Claim This PageBrookfield Place is a skyscraper office development completed in 2017 by Brookfield Properties. This project is 56 storeys tall, located at 225 6 Ave SW, Calgary, AB.
Brookfield Place Calgary is a prominent full-block commercial development situated between 1st and 2nd Streets and 6th and 7th Avenues SW in downtown Calgary. The project, originally known as "225 Sixth," has been designed by the London and Toronto-based architecture firm Arney Fender Katsalidis, with Calgary-based Dialog serving as the delivery architect. It features a 56-storey East Tower, which, upon its completion in 2017, became the tallest building in Calgary at 247 meters, surpassing The Bow.
The development includes a three-storey, 50,000 square foot transparent glass pavilion connected to the city's Plus 15 pedway system, a winter garden, and boasts sustainable design features such as storm-water management, auto sharing, carpooling, and electric plug-in parking facilities. The groundbreaking for Brookfield Place took place on October 29, 2013, with Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi in attendance, marking the start of construction for what would become a significant addition to Calgary's skyline.
Aside from the notable office and retail spaces, the building is also integrated with Calgary's Plus 15 Skywalk system, ensuring connectivity with surrounding buildings and the Calgary Light Rail Transit (LRT) system. Additional features include a bicycle park with bike ramps and an electric car plug-in recharge station, highlighting the development's commitment to sustainability and modern urban conveniences.
The design and construction of Brookfield Place Calgary have significantly contributed to the city's urban landscape, standing out against the shorter, concrete designs from the 1970s and 1980s. It is part of a broader trend of architectural development in Calgary, which includes other notable buildings like the National Music Centre by Allied Works Architecture, the Snøhetta-designed Calgary Public Library, and BIG's Telus Sky Tower.
Managed by developer Brookfield, the skyscraper is not only a testament to modern architectural achievements but also a symbol of Calgary's economic growth, particularly reflecting the city's status as the center of Canada's oil industry. The development of Brookfield Place and similar projects represent a significant shift in the city's urban and economic landscape, driven by the oil price surge in the 1970s and subsequent population and urban development boom.
