Calgary Courts Centre is a high-rise commercial development completed in 2007. This project is 24 storeys tall, located at 601 5th Street SW, Calgary, Alberta.
The Calgary Courts Centre is a landmark judicial facility located in the heart of Calgary, Alberta. It stands as the largest consolidated court centre in North America, offering over one million square feet of space. Designed by Kasian Architecture, with significant contributions from NORR Architects and Stantec for structural design, the facility comprises two interconnected towers of 20 and 24 storeys, linked by a glass atrium.
This state-of-the-art facility consolidates the Provincial Courts and Court of Queen’s Bench, enhancing the efficiency of judicial operations. The Calgary Courts Centre was built with a strong focus on sustainability, achieving LEED Silver certification. It features high-performance glazing, dynamic daylight control, and highly efficient HVAC systems, contributing to energy consumption levels 42% below the standard set by ASHRAE 90.1.
The building's interior includes 73 courtrooms, 94 judicial chambers, a library, cafeteria, and secure prisoner areas adjacent to courtrooms. A unique aspect of the design is the integration of an Indigenous courtroom, modeled after a ceremonial tepee, which reflects the cultural considerations of Alberta’s Indigenous community.
The project was completed in 2007 at a cost of $330 million. It incorporates advanced security systems to ensure the safety of all occupants, with a central control room monitoring cameras, card readers, and duress buttons across the facility. The architectural design emphasizes transparency, natural light, and accessibility, making the Calgary Courts Centre not only a hub for justice but also a welcoming public space.
