Wilden Market Square: A Step Closer to a Thriving Community Hub

The Wilden Market Square project, an anticipated development within the master-planned Wilden community in Kelowna, BC, took a significant step forward on September 13, 2024. The Wilden Group submitted its application for Phase 1 to the City of Kelowna, bringing residents and future buyers closer to enjoying this vibrant new social and commercial center. Designed to provide public amenities, gathering spaces, and essential services, Wilden Market Square aims to be a focal point for the community, enhancing the quality of life within the 1,500-acre area northwest of Glenmore.

A Vision for a Self-Sustained Community

Wilden Market Square is envisioned as a lively social and commercial hub, serving Wilden’s current 1,000 single- and multi-family homes and growing population. Phase 1 will feature two mixed-use buildings, three townhome buildings, and 151 residential units, 54 of which will be rental apartments. This phase alone will bring around 14,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space, with room for shops, cafes, and essential services that will allow residents to meet their daily needs within walking or biking distance of their homes.

The Wilden Group is already preparing the Phase 2 application, aiming for the full Market Square to be built out by 2030. This next phase will introduce an additional 23,000 square feet of commercial space, adding shops, restaurants, and local services to the development. Phase 2 will also add approximately 86 more residential units of varying sizes and public amenities focused on indoor activities for youth and families.

Market Square’s Pedestrian-Friendly Design

One of the highlights of Wilden Market Square will be a large, pedestrian-only plaza, envisioned as a year-round gathering space for events, markets, and festivals. In the warmer months, the plaza will come alive with outdoor seating as restaurants and cafes expand their dining areas into this central space. Nearby, public areas along Wilden Pond’s scenic shoreline will connect seamlessly with an indoor market hall, offering a unique indoor-outdoor experience.

Supporting this pedestrian-friendly design, all Market Square buildings will be anchored by a shared, partially underground parkade for both residents and visitors. Additional surface parking will be available, carefully positioned behind the buildings to maintain the Square’s open, community-focused aesthetic.

Phase 1 Features: Residential, Commercial, and Family-Focused Spaces

Wilden Market Square’s first phase not only promises residential and commercial spaces but also provides essential family-oriented amenities. Plans include space for a daycare, health services, and other businesses that benefit from easily accessible storefront parking. Just north of Market Square, a parcel of land has already been purchased by the school district, set aside for a future elementary school, while a nearby city park is also in the works. These additions will make Wilden Market Square an ideal community for families and residents of all ages.

A Decades-Long Vision Coming to Life

The vision for Wilden Market Square has been in development since the late 1990s, a concept that has evolved through dedicated planning and partnership with the City of Kelowna. Karin Eger-Blenk, CEO of the Wilden Group, shared her excitement for the project, highlighting the Square’s people-first design: “Our Market Square is designed for people first, and it’s the people who will breathe life into it—not the buildings, and certainly not cars.”

A New Chapter for Kelowna Real Estate and Community Life

Upon approval from the City, residential and commercial spaces in Wilden Market Square will be available for pre-purchase and lease. The development promises to offer a unique blend of social, cultural, and economic opportunities, making it a cornerstone of the Wilden community and a prime attraction in Kelowna’s real estate landscape.

As Wilden Market Square progresses toward becoming a vibrant, self-sustained community hub, it reflects Kelowna’s vision for future-ready urban spaces where residents can live, work, and connect, all within a thriving and eco-conscious environment.
